含鉄泉
がんてつせん · Iron spring
Also written 鉄泉、含鉄(II)泉、緑礬泉、赤湯
At least 20 mg/kg of total iron. Colourless at the source, it oxidises on contact with air and turns rust-brown — the water called 赤湯 ("red bath"). Where drinking is permitted it is used for iron-deficiency anaemia.
- What it is like
- Cloudy rust-red to brown. Tastes and smells distinctly of iron, like blood or old pipework. Leaves red deposits on the bath rim.
- Indications (適応症)
- Where drinking is permitted: iron-deficiency anaemia
- Contraindications (禁忌症)
- It will stain a white towel or swimsuit, permanently. Drinking is only meaningful at the source, before oxidation.
適応症 and 禁忌症 are the claims a certificate is permitted to state under the Hot Spring Act. They are not medical advice, and nothing here is. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or are unwell, ask a doctor rather than a guidebook.
