Onsen Guide runs as an app on your phone — full screen, its own icon, and the pages you have already read still open with no signal.

  1. Open this page in Safari. Add to Home Screen lives in Safari's share sheet and nowhere else, so Chrome, Firefox and the browsers inside LINE or Instagram cannot do it.
  2. Tap the Share button — the square with an arrow coming out of the top. It is in the toolbar at the bottom of an iPhone screen, and at the top on an iPad.
  3. Scroll down the list and choose “Add to Home Screen”.
  4. Tap Add. The ♨ mark appears on your Home Screen, and opening it from there gives you the app rather than a browser tab.

iOS has no one-tap install for websites, which is why these steps exist at all — there is no button we could offer you instead.

What you get

  • Full screen. No address bar and no tab strip, so the map gets the whole display.
  • Pages you have already read stay readable with no signal. Onsen are in valleys, and valleys have no reception.
  • The site's ♨ mark on your Home Screen, rather than a screenshot of whatever page you happened to be on.
  • Long-press the icon for Map and Search. (Android and desktop only — iOS ignores app shortcuts.)

One caveat, and it is worth knowing before you install: the app always opens at the English home page. A manifest can name only one starting address, and English is this site's default. Switching to 日本語 in the header works exactly as it does in a browser — it just does not survive a relaunch.
